Come meet author and journalist Gil Asakawa as he presents his newest book covering the history of your favorite Japanese foods, home-cooked, packaged, or served in restaurants, and how they came to delight the American palate.
Join us at the Center for our next book author reading and signing for Gil Asakawa’s newly published book Tabemasho! Let’s Eat! The book takes a tasty look at how Japanese food has evolved in America from an exotic and mysterious—even “gross”—cuisine to the peak of culinary popularity, with sushi sold in supermarkets across the country and ramen available in hipster restaurants everywhere. Drawing from the author’s own family foodways from his early life in Japan to moving and being raised in the U.S., Gil has eaten and now chronicled his way through this amazing food revolution.
Copies of Tabemasho! will be available to purchase at the event for $21.00 courtesy of the Nikkei Traditions store in San Jose Japantown.
About Gil Asakawa
Gil Asakawa has worked in the media as a writer, editor, music critic and online expert for 30 years. He’s currently Manager of Audience Development for MediaNews Group, the parent company of The Denver Post and San Jose Mercury News.
Gil and his partner Erin Yoshimura recently launched visualizAsian.com, a website featuring live interviews with Asian American Pacific Islander leaders to inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
The author of Being Japanese American (Stone Bridge Press, 2004) and co-author of The Toy Book (Knopf, 1991). He is a nationally-known speaker and commentator on Japanese American and Asian American identity and issues. He writes a blog, Nikkeiview.com, about pop culture and politics from an Asian American perspective. He also tweets, spends too much time on Facebook, and is a member of every social site and service he hears about.
